How to Unblock a Sink

Step-by-Step Fix

1. First, carefully scoop out any standing water from the sink bowl using a jug or small bowl, transferring it to a bucket or another drain. This will allow you to see the plug hole clearly and prevent overflow during the next steps. Wear rubber gloves to protect your hands, especially if the water is dirty or contains food waste.
2. Position a standard sink plunger firmly over the plug hole, ensuring it forms a good seal around the drain. Pump the plunger vigorously up and down for about 20-30 seconds, maintaining the seal, then quickly pull it away to create suction. Repeat this plunging action several times; listen for gurgling noises or a sudden rush of water, which indicates the blockage might be clearing.
3. Carefully pour about half a cup (around 100-120ml) of bicarbonate of soda directly down the plug hole, making sure it goes into the drain. Immediately follow this with half a cup of white vinegar; you should observe a fizzing reaction as the two combine, which helps to break down greasy blockages.
4. Quickly cover the plug hole with a stopper or a damp cloth to contain the chemical reaction and prevent fumes from escaping. Leave the mixture to work for at least 15 minutes, allowing it time to dissolve the blockage. After the waiting period, flush the drain with a kettle full of hot, but not boiling, water; boiling water can damage PVC pipes.
5. If the sink is still blocked, place a sturdy bucket directly underneath the U-bend pipe situated under your sink to catch any water and debris. Using a spanner or by hand, carefully unscrew the nuts on both sides of the U-bend to detach it, then empty out any accumulated hair, grease, or food waste into the bucket. Be prepared for a strong odour and wear gloves.
6. Once the U-bend is thoroughly cleaned, carefully reattach it, ensuring the nuts are tightened securely by hand or with a spanner to prevent leaks. Turn on the cold tap and let the water run for a minute or two to test the flow and check for any drips or leaks around the newly reattached U-bend. If it drains freely and there are no leaks, the blockage is cleared.
