How to Fix a Squeaky Floorboard

Step-by-Step Fix

1. Start by carefully walking across the floor in the suspected area, listening intently to pinpoint the exact location of the squeak. Apply pressure with your foot to identify the specific floorboard or section of floorboards that are moving and causing the noise before proceeding.
2. Once the squeaky board is identified, use an electronic stud finder to locate the floor joist underneath, marking its position lightly with a pencil. Alternatively, measure 400mm or 600mm from a known joist (e.g., against a wall) to estimate the joist's centre, as these are common UK joist spacings.
3. Before drilling, ensure there are no hidden pipes or electrical cables using a multi-scanner for safety. Carefully drill a pilot hole (a few millimetres smaller than your screw's diameter) straight through the floorboard and approximately 25-30mm into the centre of the identified joist below.
4. Select a countersunk wood screw that is long enough to penetrate the floorboard and firmly embed into the joist by at least 25mm, typically 50-75mm in total length. Drive the screw slowly and firmly through the pilot hole until the head is flush with, or slightly below, the floorboard surface, ensuring it pulls the board down tightly to the joist and eliminates the squeak.
5. Once the screw is securely in place and the squeak is gone, take a small amount of wood filler and carefully press it into the countersunk screw hole. Smooth the filler flush with the floorboard surface using a putty knife or your finger, allowing it to dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions before sanding or finishing.
6. If you have safe and clear access to the underside of the floorboards (e.g., from a cellar or crawl space), measure and cut a sturdy timber block (approximately 50x50mm) to fit snugly between the underside of the squeaky floorboard and the side of the nearest joist. Apply wood adhesive to the top edge of the block and push it firmly into place, securing it with a screw or nail driven at an angle into the joist for additional stability.
