Step-by-Step Fix

1. Firstly, head to your consumer unit (fuse box) and locate the circuit breaker labelled for your kitchen or specifically for the waste disposal unit. Flip the switch to the 'off' position to completely cut the power, ensuring your safety before proceeding with any repairs.
2. Next, look directly underneath the waste disposal unit for a small hexagonal hole, typically in the centre of the unit. Insert the correct size Allen key (often supplied with the disposal, usually 1/4 inch or 6mm) firmly into this opening.
3. Once the Allen key is securely in place, slowly turn it back and forth in both directions. This action manually rotates the impellers inside the disposal, which helps to dislodge whatever is causing the jam.
4. After freeing the impellers with the Allen key, use a torch to look inside the disposal's drain opening for any visible debris. Carefully remove any food scraps, cutlery, or other objects using a pair of long-handled tongs, absolutely never putting your hand inside the unit.
5. Finally, return to your consumer unit and switch the circuit breaker back to the 'on' position to restore power to the disposal. Run some cold water into the sink and switch on the disposal for a few seconds to ensure it is now spinning freely and the jam is fully cleared.
