How to Fix Creaking Stairs

Step-by-Step Fix

1. Carefully walk up and down the staircase, listening closely to pinpoint the exact step or steps that are creaking. Press firmly on different areas of each tread to isolate the source of the noise before moving on.
2. If you have access to the underside of the stairs, locate where the creaking tread meets the riser. Drill pilot holes and then drive 50-75mm wood screws up through the underside of the riser into the back edge of the tread, ensuring they bite firmly into both pieces of wood.
3. For accessible areas underneath the stairs, cut small triangular or rectangular wood blocks from a suitable timber offcut. Apply wood glue to the faces of these blocks and firmly wedge or screw them into the joints between the underside of the tread and the stringer, ensuring a snug fit to eliminate movement.
4. If the creaking persists or you cannot access the stairs from below, sprinkle talcum powder or apply graphite powder along the seams where the creaking treads meet the risers and stringers from above. Allow the lubricant to work its way into the joints by stepping on the creaky parts a few times.
5. After attempting each repair method, walk up and down the treated sections of the stairs several times to assess if the creaking has stopped or reduced. If the noise is still present, re-evaluate the source and consider applying more pressure or trying a different technique before proceeding to the next step.
