Step-by-Step Fix

1. Before you begin any work on your cooker hood, always ensure the power supply is completely off. Locate the fuse box or the dedicated switch for your kitchen appliances and switch off the electricity to the cooker hood to prevent any risk of electric shock. Double-check that the hood lights and fan are no longer operating.
2. Carefully remove the grease filters from the underside of the cooker hood; these are typically metal mesh panels held in place by small clips or latches. Gently press or slide the release mechanism, then carefully lower each filter away from the hood casing. Some models may have an additional carbon filter located behind the grease filters, which you should also remove if present.
3. If you have metal grease filters, immerse them in a sink or large basin filled with very hot, soapy water, using a strong dishwashing liquid to help break down grease. Allow them to soak for at least 20-30 minutes, then scrub thoroughly with a brush or sponge to remove all embedded grease and grime. Rinse them completely under clean, running water until no suds or residue remain.
4. For cooker hoods with carbon filters, check their condition for signs of saturation, such as a strong lingering odour even after cleaning, or a dense, heavy feel. Unlike metal filters, carbon filters cannot be washed effectively and must be replaced; dispose of the old carbon filter and prepare to fit a brand new one. Ensure you have the correct size and type for your specific cooker hood model.
5. After cleaning, it's crucial to dry all components thoroughly before reinstalling them. You can air dry the metal filters completely on a drying rack, or use a clean cloth to wipe away excess water. Ensure there is no moisture left on any part of the filter to prevent potential damage or mould growth.
6. Once all filters are completely dry and, if applicable, the new carbon filter is in place, carefully re-insert them into the cooker hood, ensuring they click securely into their original positions. Return to your fuse box or switch, restore the power supply to the cooker hood, and then test the fan and lights to confirm everything is working correctly.
