Step-by-Step Fix

1. Carefully snip any remaining parts of the broken spoke with wire cutters, especially near the hub flange and rim. Then, use a spoke key to fully unthread the spoke nipple from the rim, allowing you to pull out the spoke from the hub.
2. Select a new spoke that is exactly the same length and gauge as the one you removed; using the wrong size can lead to further wheel problems. Ensure you have a replacement spoke nipple and washer if the original ones were damaged or lost.
3. Thread the new spoke through the correct hole in the hub flange, ensuring its head seats properly against the flange. Then, carefully guide the other end of the spoke through the corresponding hole in the rim and attach the spoke nipple, turning it a few times until it just catches the threads.
4. Using a spoke key, begin to tighten the new spoke nipple, turning it clockwise in quarter-turn increments. Compare its tension by plucking it alongside adjacent spokes; it should feel roughly as taut as its neighbours but avoid overtightening at this stage.
5. With the new spoke partially tightened, mount the wheel back onto your bike or a truing stand to check for wobbles. Slowly turn the wheel and use a truing stand indicator or a fixed point on your frame to identify any lateral deviations, adjusting spoke tensions carefully to pull the rim back into alignment.
