1. Firstly, either secure your wheel in a dedicated truing stand or re-mount it into your bike's frame or fork. Ensure the wheel is firmly seated and spinning freely, allowing you to easily rotate it for inspection.
2. Carefully spin the wheel and observe its movement relative to the truing stand's calipers or your bike's brake pads. Note the areas where the rim deviates significantly from a straight line, indicating the 'wobble' or lateral run-out.
3. Locate the spoke nipples on the side of the wheel towards which the rim is pulling or 'wobbling' excessively at a particular point. Using a correctly sized spoke key, turn these nipples anti-clockwise by a quarter to half a turn each to slightly relieve spoke tension in that specific area.
4. Immediately after loosening, identify the corresponding spokes on the *opposite* side of the wheel from the wobble you just addressed. Turn these nipples clockwise by the same amount – a quarter to half a turn each – to increase tension and pull the rim back towards the centre.
5. After adjusting, spin the wheel again and re-check its lateral run-out against your reference points. Repeat steps 3 and 4 as necessary, making small, incremental adjustments until the wheel runs as straight and true as possible, with no major high or low spots.
