1. Firstly, spray a dedicated de-icer or a PTFE-based lubricant directly into the keyhole and around any moving parts of the lock mechanism. Allow it to penetrate for a minute or two to dissolve any ice and free up seized components.
2. Alternatively, if you have access to power, carefully use a hairdryer on a low setting to gently warm the entire lock, concentrating on the keyhole and shackle. Avoid holding the hairdryer too close or using high heat, which could damage plastic components or internal lubricants.
3. After applying de-icer or warming the lock, insert your key fully into the keyhole and try to gently turn it back and forth. Do not force the key, as this could bend or break it inside the lock, creating a much bigger problem.
4. Once the lock starts to free up, generously apply a graphite powder or a dry Teflon-based lubricant into the keyhole and across all moving parts to ensure smooth operation. Avoid using oil-based lubricants as they can attract dirt and freeze in cold weather.
