How to Descale a Kettle

Step-by-Step Fix

1. Firstly, ensure your kettle is completely empty before you begin. Carefully pour either 100-150ml of white vinegar or the juice of 2-3 lemons (about 60-90ml) into the kettle, making sure not to exceed the halfway mark to allow for expansion.
2. Next, fill the remainder of the kettle with cold tap water right up to its 'MAX' fill line. Place the kettle securely on its base and switch it on to bring the solution to a full boil, ensuring it automatically switches off once boiled.
3. Once the solution has boiled, turn off the kettle at the wall socket and carefully unplug it for safety. Allow the hot descaling solution to soak inside the kettle for 1 to 2 hours, or longer if you can still see significant limescale deposits clinging to the elements or sides.
4. After soaking, carefully pour the descaling solution out of the kettle and into a sink. Give the inside of the kettle a thorough rinse with cold tap water, checking carefully that all visible limescale residue and the strong smell of vinegar/lemon have been washed away.
5. To eliminate any lingering taste or scent, refill the kettle with fresh tap water to the 'MAX' line and boil it. Pour this water away, then repeat this boiling and discarding process a second time to ensure your kettle is completely clean and ready for your next cuppa.
