1. Before you begin, ensure you set up a sturdy ladder on firm, level ground, checking that all feet are securely planted to prevent wobbling. For safety, ask someone to steady the base of the ladder for you as you ascend and descend, and avoid leaning out too far from the ladder's centre.
2. Don your heavy-duty rubber gloves to protect your hands from grime and sharp objects. Carefully scoop out large debris like leaves, moss, and twigs from the gutter using a trowel or a dedicated gutter scoop, making sure to remove as much solid material as possible.
3. As you scoop the debris, immediately place it into a sturdy bucket hooked to your ladder or positioned on the ground below, preventing it from falling onto paths or flowerbeds. Continuously empty the bucket as it fills to avoid it becoming too heavy or unstable on the ladder.
4. Once you've manually removed all the visible debris from the gutter channel, use a garden hose on a moderate setting to flush out any remaining dirt and grit. Observe the water flowing freely along the entire length of the gutter towards the downspout, indicating it is clear.
5. Finally, check the downspout for blockages by running the hose directly into its opening. You should hear and see water flowing freely out of the bottom of the downspout; if not, there's a blockage that will need further investigation and clearing.
